Laughter and cups of tea

Created by James 3 years ago

Having read through some of the other stories here, I can see a lot of commonality with my own memories of Yuk Lin, who I initially got to know as "Zanna's Mum". I would have been around 16/17 the first time I visited Zan and her family, already so many years ago now. Thinking back, I just have a sense of how welcome Yuk Lin always made you feel when you arrived, and how she would always ask after your family. Even when in my case there were often years between meetings, it never felt as if you had really been away. My fondest memories are simple ones, just sitting there with the family and friends at the kitchen table (basically taking over the kitchen) and drinking copious amounts of tea. Yuk Lin would always chat and laugh away with us, and always engaged with whatever (often silly) games we would play or things we would discuss. And I cannot keep myself from mentioning her delicious cooking. I also recall being taught to eat with chopsticks for the first time, which was probably quite amusing for everyone except me (but was a lesson which subsequently served me very well). It was home.

I am so glad I had a chance to know this strong, energetic, kind and funny lady, who will be sorely missed, and who I am only sorry not  to have seen more of in recent years. Nevertheless, I am grateful for the happy memories which remain.
